- Increasing pursuit of industry partnerships or contracts Seeking international funding or collaborations Reducing research scope, staffing, or operations Delaying or canceling planned projects Increasing pursuit of private foundation or philanthropic fundinguser-434168From what I’ve seen around me, most labs aren’t relying on a single adjustment—they’re trying a mix of strategies just to stay stable. For example, a colleague’s group recently started working more closely with an industry partner to support part of their project after a grant didn’t come through. It wasn’t their original plan, but it helped keep the work going. There’s also been more openness to international collaborations, especially where funding calls are still active or less constrained. In a few cases, projects have been scaled down—fewer experiments, smaller sample sizes, or delayed hiring of students and postdocs. I’ve also seen planned projects pushed back simply because the funding timeline became uncertain. At the same time, people are putting more effort into foundation or philanthropic funding, even though those are often smaller and more competitive. Overall, it feels less like a single shift and more like labs trying to diversify their options to manage uncertainty.

- Pivoting research focus toward government-designated priority areas Reducing research scope, staffing, or operations Delaying or canceling planned projects Exploring positions outside of researchuser-30760Research scope of lab has been reduced due to funding, limiting the scope of research we can propose on future grant applications, which then reduces our chances of funding. Several lab members, myself included, have begun exploring positions outside of research and academia.

The funding cliff drops in August 2026 and we will be left with 1.5 scientific staff, down from 10. My will is so eroded I’m considering non-science jobs.

I've been exploring diverse sources of funding, but because everyone else is doing the same the competition is rough.
